About Me
Catherine Palmer
MS, LPC, LMHC, MFT, Ph.D. (Biology)
My life is guided by the belief that all living things have value and deserve compassion. I’m originally from the Midwest, but I moved to Oregon in 1994 to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Environmental Science. I then went on to get my Ph.D. in molecular biology and worked as a research scientist for over a decade. I eventually discovered that, although I love science, my life was becoming consumed by my career, which wasn’t as meaningful as I wanted it to be. It was at that point that I decided to dial back on science and pursue something I felt more passionate about
I’m a licensed professional counselor in both Oregon and Washington state.
I obtained my Masters degree in Counseling from Portland State University, with a specialty in Marital, Couple and Family Therapy, which has enriched my life. I have been certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and I have additional extensive training in Emotion Focused Therapy for individuals, Emotional Focused Therapy for couples, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and the Gottman Method.
I’ve been able to help many individuals and couples create healthier, more satisfying relationships with themselves and others. It’s a profound experience to witness the ways in which people are able to overcome their struggles and empower themselves. It brings me great satisfaction to be able to help others make permanent positive changes in their lives and in their relationships. I grow and learn from each of my clients and have the utmost respect and admiration for their courage and commitment to heal.
I taught Biology at the university level for nearly 20 years, and have discovered that my knowledge of both psychology and biology provides me with unique and powerful tools as a counselor. In fact, I strongly believe in the interpersonal neurobiology concept of “inspire to rewire” the brain via a supportive and nurturing therapeutic relationship.
Lastly, I too have experienced my own share of trials and tribulations in life. I know how restorative and life enhancing good counseling can be. It is my greatest honor to be able to guide others to a better place in their relationship(s) and in their lives.
